Report sheds new details on welfare check turned officer-involved shooting that killed homeowner

The homeowner who was killed following a Friday officer-involved shooting near Weslaco fired at law enforcement officers at the scene and threatened to kill them, according to a report filed by the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office.

The custodial death report was filed with the Texas Attorney General’s Office following the death of 39-year-old Rigo Mendez.

As previously reported, deputies with the sheriff’s office responded to the 7000 block of Mile 3 ½ in rural Weslaco after neighbors reported shots were being fired inside a home while children were inside, according to a news release.

According to the report, deputies heard gunshots coming from the home that were being fired toward their direction.

“A negotiator was communicating with the suspect, who stated that he had a visual of law enforcement officers and was going to kill them,” the report stated.

Mendez then came out of the house through the garage with a fire and gunfire was exchanged, and he fell to the ground.

Mendez was airlifted to a local hospital, and succumbed to his injuries, the report stated. 

The Texas Rangers is investigating the shooting.
