Valley Veterinarian Warns Pet Owners About Fleas and Ticks

WESLACO – Veterinarians are warning pet owners that warmer temperatures can cause more fleas and ticks.

This not only affects pet owners, but also termite control businesses.

Mario Trevino says business is up. More people are asking him to spray their homes for fleas and ticks.

He says the spray kills the pests for several months, before its needed again.

"They want the host," said Trevino, owner of Affordable Pest and Termite Control. "They want the animal."

Trevino says the parasites also go after people, as well as pets. Veterinarians report more clients right now, with more reports of fleas and ticks.

"We can't keep our flea and tick preventatives on the shelf," says veterinarian Dr. Jessica Ruiz, owner of Weslaco Animal Clinic. "Clients are coming in left and right for fleas and tick preventatives."

The vet checked the ears, toes and armpits of a newborn puppy for ticks.

For fleas, she searched through the hair for little flecks called flea dirt.

“Sometimes towards the base of the tail, or up around the neck area," she says.

She recommends every pet owner check their animal to make sure they're doing okay.
