MCALLEN – It’s unknown if a bar in McAllen’s entertainment district will re-open Friday night following an early morning raid.

It all happened shortly after 1 a.m. at LIT Ultra Bar on 17th street.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS learned it was part of a drug investigation.

McAllen police were very specific saying no one was shot in the raid. However, they did take one man into custody.

Ivan Gustavo, 23, was charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon, a third-degree felony.

People who work nearby were surprised to hear the news Friday morning. They say things like this don’t happen on that part of 17th street.

“Generally, the first two to three blocks have security and they’ve been around for a number of years so they are well-established bars,” explained Joe Escamilla, who works at Mcallen Sports Inc just across the alley from LIT.

Escamilla says he hopes what happened doesn’t impact the image of the McAllen entertainment district.

“It gives it a bad name and it’s unfortunate because a lot of the businesses have been around for years,” he says. “So it’s a tough market because there’s so many different bars out there.”

Escamilla says adding situations like these tend to stay farther south 17th Street.

Lt. Joel Morales with the McAllen Police Department tells us the operation was all part of a joint initiative between Texas Department of Public Safety, the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office, the DEA and the McAllen Police Department.

He says more arrests will be made.
