NEAR ELSA – The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating a one vehicle fatal crash that occurred at 7:10 p.m. on Mile 14 between FM-88 and Mile 6 West.

Preliminary investigation revealed a GMC Envoy, occupied by driver and passenger, was traveling eastbound on Mile 14 at a high rate of speed.

The driver lost control and veered off to the south-side of the roadway. Driver then entered a sugar cane field where the vehicle rolled over several times.

The driver was identified as 34-year-old Homero Castillo Coronado of Weslaco. He was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

The passenger was transported to McAllen Medical Center with injuries.

DPS troopers continue to investigate the crash.
