DONNA – Two people are in custody including a 20-year-old charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after he rammed his car into two DPS vehicles.

It happened on South Hutto Road just after a chase ended on Wednesday. DPS said the driver of a Honda Civic being chased crashed into a tree in the front yard of a home.

Troopers boxed him in and that’s when they say the driver, 20-year-old Jonathan Chavez of Alamo, reversed and deliberately hit the DPS units.

Authorities found 10 bundles of marijuana inside the trunk and rear seat of the vehicle.

Chavez is in custody and charged with evading arrest with a motor vehicle, possession of marijuana and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

His passenger, 49-year-old Melchor Gaspar Diaz-Ponce, was also taken into custody. He’s charged with possession of marijuana.

Both men are being held at the Cameron County Jail. The troopers in the units struck were not hurt.
