WESLACO – The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is forecasting a drop in air quality for the next couple of days.

Allergy and asthma sufferers could be affected as this air quality causes conditions to act up.

Smoke is likely to enter the Rio Grande Valley due to the combination of a huge agricultural burn in Mexico and a consistent strong easterly wind.

Dr. Umesh Pathak with the Mid-Valley Pediatric and Allergy Center says there’s usually a spike in allergy and asthma sufferers this time of year.

He advises to limit outdoor activity and take preventative medications if needed.

KRGV’s Cecilia Gutierrez explains the agricultural burning in Mexico doesn’t go through the same regulations farmers go through in the U.S.
