SANTA FE – Texas Gov. Greg Abbott confirms at least 10 are dead following a high school shooting.

Santa Fe High School, located southeast of Houston in the city of Santa Fe, was placed on lockdown around 8 a.m. and has since been evacuated, says Santa Fe ISD police.

Eight people, mostly students, were initially confirmed dead by the Harris County Sherriff’s Office in a press briefing Friday morning.

We learned a total of 12 people were taken to local hospitals. One police officer was also reportedly injured.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said one suspect, a 17-year-old student, is in custody, as well as a second person of interest.

In another press conference shortly after 10 a.m., officials of a local hospital said three patients, two adults and one minor, were treated for gunshot wounds.

Authorities say students are being transported to a local gym to reunite with parents.

Federal and state law enforcement agencies continue to sweep for possible explosive devices that have been located at the school, at a home and a vehicle. If any community member sees something suspicious, they're asked to call 9-1-1.

Abbott added investigators found evidence the suspect was planning to shoot up the school.

He explains two weapons, a shotgun and a .38 caliber revolver were used in the attack. Neither weapons were legally owned by the student.

Anyone with information on the case is urged to call 1-800-225-5324.
