LUBBOCK – A lockdown at Texas Tech University has been lifted following the capture of a gunman who killed a university police officer.

University spokesperson Chris Cook said an officer was shot and killed at the campus police headquarters.  

The gunman was captured and arrested. He is identified as a 19-year-old student.

Cook said the suspect was taken to the headquarters for questioning after officers found drugs in the student’s room during a welfare check.

He said the student shot the officer in the head and took off running.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS was able to speak with a Texas Tech nursing student while she was held up in a room with over a dozen other students while police searched for the suspect.

“There was a security officer walking around and he locked us in here and he told us don't leave, don't go outside and don’t go to your cars or anything like that. We are definitely trying to stay calm and have a little humor and just hang out to relieve the stress a little bit," said Texas Tech student Brittney Gehman.

There have been no new injuries reported. The suspect was caught just after 9:30 p.m.
