WESLACO – Thousands of immigrants leave their home countries in Central America for a new life in the U.S.

Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras all have consulates in the Rio Grande Valley; they’re willing to help but some immigrants are afraid to ask.

KRGV’s Christian Colón spoke with over a dozen immigrants who say they prefer not to ask for assistance even though it’s offered.

A representative of the consulate of Guatemala, Ana Fernandez, says they assist in document verification for the immigration process, as well as help to connect immigrants with their families.

She explains many come to the U.S. to get away from poverty and violence in their home country.
