WESLACO – Some Deferred Action of Childhood Arrivals recipients are suing the U.S. government over President Trump’s decision to end the program.

The lawsuit was filed Monday in San Francisco by six immigrants, who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children.

The lawsuit said the government’s move to end DACA violated the constitutional rights of immigrants who lack legal status.

A U.S. Department of Justice spokesperson blamed the Obama administration for starting the program and said the agency will defend President Trump’s decision.

Attorney General Jeff Session announced the decision to end DACA nearly two weeks ago. The program which protected nearly 800,000 immigrants from deportation and allowed them to work in the U.S. will be phased out completely in March, if congress cannot come up with a way to fix the program.

DACA is also making headlines last week when a group of DACA recipients were detained at the Falfurrias checkpoint.

U.S. Border Patrol Rio Grande Valley Sector Chief Manuel Padilla said the detainment was to verify their DACA status.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection told CHANNEL 5 NEWS this is standard procedure for DACA recipients who come across checkpoints.
