A DACA recipient who recently finished his training to be a commercial truck driver is now in limbo.

In August, the State Department announced a pause in providing commercial driver licenses for many immigrants.

The Texas Department of Public Safety followed suit the following month, announcing that DACA recipients, refugees and asylum recipients will no longer be able to receive or renew commercial licenses.

A Valley DACA recipient who asked to not be identified said he followed all the rules. He completed his commercial driver training and was ready to hit the road.

But days after getting his license, the state told him it was no longer valid due to his immigration status.

He said he has lived in the U.S. for 20 years, and earned his commercial license in August through a state-sponsored program.

But now, trucking companies won't be able to hire him.

“I got my license and I was literally applying to a lot of different trucking companies and then this new policy came up,” he said. “So now they won't accept me because they don't want non-domicile CDLs.”

The DACA recipient said he is now considering moving out of Texas to find a job. He's relying on unemployment benefits and looking into a career in firefighting or corrections.

Other students who were also in the middle of completing their training are now left in limbo.
