MERCEDES – Parts of the eastbound lanes of Expressway 83 closed for a couple of hours in Mercedes due to a major crash.

A tractor trailer and a pickup trailer collided Monday afternoon causing a spill of mulch products and diesel fuel onto the expressway.

Traffic was rerouted off the expressway onto Frontage Road before the Mile 2 exit for several hours.

A chemical response and remediation company out of Brownsville is cleaning up to ensure the road is clear of any slick chemical residue.

Crews placed an absorbent on the diesel oil as required by the EPA and the TCEQ. They also cleared off a patch of dirt that was contaminated by the oil.

No injuries were reported.

Mercedes police is looking into what caused the accident.

Crews are expected to take up a couple hours to clean up the mess.
