EL CENIZO – A federal court has ordered a nation-wide injunction effectively blocking President Donald Trump’s executive order on sanctuary cities.

A city almost three hours north of the Rio Grande Valley considers itself a sanctuary city.

The city of El Cenizo Mayor Raul Reyes filed a lawsuit against the sanctuary cities bill in Texas, similar to the president’s executive order.

The city has an ordinance that offers a safe haven to people in the country illegally.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS reached out to the mayor for his reaction since his community stands to lose money as a sanctuary city.

Reyes explained the decision is a step forward. However, a lot of work needs to be done.

“For El Cenizo and other communities in Texas, I think it’s very premature right now to sign victory. Although I do know this decision will impact the whole state on sanctuary cities and where we go from here moving forward,” he said.

The block of the sanctuary cities bill allows cities, like El Cenizo, to get federal funding.

The judge said the president cannot set new conditions on spending approved by Congress.

The Department of Justice is blasting the ruling accusing the court of exceeding its authority and promised to take action.
