Fatal Hit-and-Run in Harlingen

UPDATE (12/12 - 6:00 p.m.): Harlingen police said a man turned himself in, claiming to be the driver of the vehicle that struck the four teens Sunday morning, killing 19-year-old Eden Arriaga Jr.

The man turned himself in before 5:00 p.m. on Monday and hasn’t been officially charged with anything. Police said he was accompanied by his attorney.

Police said they impounded the 27-year-old man’s gold Chevy pickup, that appears to have damage on the front bumper.

The man is expected to be charged with one count of accident involving death and three counts of accident involving serious bodily injury.

UPDATE (12/12): Family members of the teen killed in the accident identified him as 19-year-old Eden Arriaga Jr. of Harlingen. They said Arriaga and his friends were playing basketball at a nearby park.

They said the teens were hit one block from Arriaga’s home. The driver fled the scene.

Harlingen police said they are reviewing surveillance video from Sunday morning.

HARLINGEN--Harlingen police is looking for the driver of an early 90's Chevrolet pick-up truck involved in a fatal hit-and-run early Sunday morning.

The crash happened around 1:30 a.m. at Cottonwood and New Hampshire. One teen was killed and three others were hurt. The teens were between 16-18 years old. They were walking down New Hampshire when they were struck by a vehicle. The driver took off.

A 17-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. The other teens were taken to the hospital. Right now, the name of the deceased victim has not been released.

A neighbor, Marta Garza, said she hasn't been able to sleep since this happened.

"We can't sleep in peace because this accident happened right here in the back, right next to our bedroom," she said.

Garza said she hopes the suspect is caught.
