WESLACO – The federal government has granted assistance to flood victims in Cameron and Hidalgo counties.

A press release posted to the Gov. Greg Abbott’s website states the request was approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and President Trump.

This comes following his visit to the Rio Grande Valley a week ago.

Abbott says he can add counties to the disaster declaration and assistance request as damages continue to be assessed.

Residents whose homes were damaged are encouraged to register with FEMA by calling 800-621-3362 or by visiting the website.

Once registered, residents will receive an application from the Small Business Administration.

Those who have received assistance from FEMA in the past may not be eligible for the funds if flood insurance was not purchased.
