MCALLEN – Fire officials want residents to be aware of important safety precautions to take while hanging Christmas lights this season.

This tradition could cause a fire hazard if it’s not completed in a safe manner.

“An inspection of those lights is important. If it looks like there is some frayed wiring or if it looks like they’re old, they're starting to become brittle, the actual wiring itself, it’s probably a good idea to replace those,” says McAllen Fire Department Lieutenant Vince Abrigo.

He says this is especially true if you leave your lights hanging all year long. He adds, one spark could lead to a fire.

KRGV’s Trason Bragg spoke with a local family who takes on this tradition every year.
