HARLINGEN – The Cameron County Salvation Army is reminding people that there are free coats available for pick up this winter.

The Salvation Army is located in Harlingen on 2nd Street and Monroe.

People living within Cameron County and some in Willacy County can go by the office, during business hours, to request a coat, gloves, beanies and blankets. Heaters are also sometimes available.

Those seeking assistance must bring an ID and a second form of ID.

“So they come in… They pick out their hats… coats that (were) donated and that’s because we’ve given a lot. These are more that they’ve dropped off and we’ve got blankets,” social worker Connie Rodriguez said.

Those seeking immediate shelter after business hours can visit the Loaves and Fishes center located on E Street in Harlingen. In Brownsville, people can seek shelter at the Ozanam Center which is open 24/7, located on Minnesota Road.

Rodriguez said the Salvation Army also takes donations year-round.
