PALMVIEW – A Rio Grande Valley woman says wearing several layers of clothing is the only way for her to stay warm during the cold weather.

Hortencia Silva says her only source of income is her Social Security check, which mainly goes for bills. She was gifted a heater some time ago but it turned out to be defective.

The program manager for the Hidalgo County Community Service Agency says there’s help for people like Silva.

The agency was able to purchase some 100 heaters for low-income residents in need.

Since the program is state-funded, each heater must be accounted for so only people in low-income households can apply for assistance.

Those interested in receiving a free heater can visit their office located at 2524 N Closner Blvd or call at 956-383-6240.

It’s important to note that the HCCSA office will be closed Thursday and Friday for the holidays.
