NEAR EDINBURG – Hidalgo County is bringing back Precinct 5 offices in the delta area.

The county commissioner’s court voted unanimously to place a Justice of the Peace and county constable in the northeast corner of the county.

The county eliminated those offices back in 2012 citing a lower population in Precinct 5 than in other precincts.

Elsa, Edcouch and the Monte Alto area have been served by JP and constable offices in Weslaco since the change.

Commissioner Joseph Palacios said it’s about time the county brings the services back to the delta area.

“You know the delta area is very disconnected for the most part. There’s a lot of at-risk kids coming out of that area and we need a local presence of a JP office and law enforcement and all,” he said.

The Justice of the Peace and constable seat will be on the ballot in 2018 and would start operations in 2019.
