ICE to Begin DNA Testing Trial for Immigrant Family Units

WESLACO – A federal agency will soon depend on science to help determine units claiming to be families.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement will begin a pilot program to test the DNA of immigrants.

A mother who is seeking asylum with her six-year-old daughter tells CHANNEL 5 NEWS she provided birth certificates, her passport, contact information and addresses to prove they were related – for now, that’s all that’s needed.

ICE will soon seek more as those suspected of pretending to be the parents will undergo DNA testing.

Department of Homeland Security officials say the test will be voluntary.
