Incumbent Cameron County judge loses Democratic nomination to Steve Guerra, unofficial results show
Unofficial election results from Tuesday's primary runoff show incumbent Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr. has lost the Democratic nomination to Esteban 'Steve' Guerra.
Guerra is projected to secure the seat with over 55% of the vote (roughly 10,000 ballots), while Treviño trailed with 44%
Guerra, who served as Port of Brownsville chairman for four years, said he wanted to run for county judge because the county needed change.
"We're ready to work; we're ready to continue working. Hopefully we're going to be putting all our swords down and really working together as a party to bring this home in November," Guerra said.
Treviño Jr. also addressed the likely outcome.
"I made sure that we ran an issue-focused and positive campaign. I think that my opponent did everything he could to smear me," Treviño Jr. said.
The votes still need to be canvassed before becoming official.
Once that happens, the race moves to the November general election, where Guerra will face Republican challenger Mauro Garza.
