LYFORD - Investigators are determining the cause of an overnight fire in Lyford.

Firefighters got the first call about the blaze around 4 a.m. It happened at 11th Street and Cantu Avenue. When they arrived at the scene, the home was fully engulfed in flames.

One firefighter at the scene was treated for possible smoke inhalation. According to fire crews, the fire resulted in a total loss.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS learned the homeowner was out of town, but a house sitter was inside at the time. That person was able to escape the fire.

The next door neighbors are the parents and sibling of the homeowner.

We spoke to Juanita Cano, the sister of the homeowner. She said the friend that was housesitting was the one who called for help.

And she mentioned the home that caught fire was the home she was raised in.

“My parents live here and I live right there but we didn’t hear anything,” Cano said. “My sister called that her house was burning to go see my mom. So I came running and I knocked on the door, so I had the keys but the police they were already coming to help get my parents out.”

She said she was unaware of what was happening next door. She said her father suffers from asthma and as a result of the fire he had to reach for his inhaler.

She added it’s a miracle that the fire did not spread to her parents’ house due to the close proximity. She said her sister is on her way home and they plan to assess the damage and begin the cleanup process.

Lyford Fire Chief Benjamin Sanchez said a fire investigator will be investigating what caused the fire. They are expected to head to the home later Friday afternoon.

We’ll bring you more updates as soon as they’re available.
