HARLINGEN- A man was arrested and accused of assaulting a police officer on Thursday.

Police say an officer saw a suspicious man on the 800 block of East Harrison Avenue just before 1:30 a.m.

When he tried to make contact with 36 year old Carlos Ruiz, he fled on foot.

Authorities say Ruiz began assaulting the officer when he was caught after a brief chase. Backup arrived shortly after and took him into custody.

The officer sustained minor injuries.
