MCALLEN – Mexican authorities have been signing some people from the Central American caravan for transit or humanitarian visas.

The Mexican consul in McAllen, Eduardo Bernal Martinez, explains this caravan is not new. He says the annual event has been happening for nearly a decade.

According to Consul Martinez, the caravan is more of a symbolic event. It’s held around Easter to draw attention and awareness to the migrant journey.

The caravan group is said to have never left South Mexico. However, some participants do travel further north.

On Tuesday, some of the group started receiving documents from the Mexican government. Not all were approved for the proper paperwork to stay in the country.
