WESLACO – It’s not about the money that was lost or the car keys. When Marisa Miranda found out her daughter's handbag was missing, she was concerned about her identity.

"I'm afraid they're going to use it or sell it," she said.

Her daughter's clutch disappeared with her social security card, birth certificate and driver's license.

Returning to the U.S. border crossing empty-handed meant U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers had to carefully vet Miranda's daughter's identity.

"Prove to them that my daughter was born in the U.S.," said Miranda.

She said the family was on a normal outing in Nuevo Progreso. Her daughter mistakenly put down her clutch while going to the bathroom.

"We ran back," said Miranda. "We noticed the wallet was no longer there."

According to CBP, you don't need many documents to get back into the U.S. You just need one approved form of identification.

If you're a U.S. citizen crossing a land border, those include:

• Passport
• Passport card
• Trusted Traveler Program Card
• Enhanced Driver's License
• Military Identification Card

If returning by air, the required documents are:

• Passport
• Trusted Traveler Program Card
• Military ID

CBP warns it may take longer to get into the country if you don't bring the proper documentation.
