SAN JUAN – The city of San Juan voted for a new mayor with about 20 percent voter turnout.

Mario Garza, former Mayor Pro Tem, ran against the incumbent Mayor San Juanita Sanchez. She was mayor for the past six years.

Garza said he’s focusing on uniting the community. He said he learned a lot about the community while campaigning. He was made aware of issues he didn’t know before from talking to voters.

Garza said the role of mayor won’t be too different from his previous position, adding that he’s just one of five not the majority.

“Cause the way I'm going to approach this is that you gotta understand that if you’re the mayor, your vote holds the same weight as the rest of the commission does. And the approach that I'm going to take is that we're all in this together, and just cause yes I'm the leader, so to say, guess what my vote is just as valuable as a commissioners vote,” he said.

Sanchez said she was hopeful going into the election. The outcome, however, wasn’t in her favor. But she said she’s humbled for the time she was mayor.

Sanchez said this isn’t the end of her political career. She’ll be looking to run for a state position in the future.
