HARLINGEN - A better benefits plan is on the way for veterans.

The Mission Act was signed into law last year; Veterans Affairs officials say veterans will get faster care closer to home.

Laura Vela and Rolando Garcia joined the Army to better the country.

Vela is the first female in her family to join the military.

"After 9/11 there was a motivation there that I needed to serve my country the best way that I could," she says.

Vela says she came back with injuries she suffered during her trainings and service.

Like Vela, Garcia was also the first in his family to join the military.

He says he lives in Port Isabel and has to travel almost an hour to receive treatment in Harlingen.

Before, veterans had to be referred to a provider or had to get treatment at a VA hospital; now that has changed.

Veterans will now have the choice to see the VA or an outside provider.

The Mission Act takes effect June 6.

Vela encourages anyone who has questions to reach out to their local VA clinic with any questions.
