HOLLY BEACH – The person who owns Holly Beach marked it off in several shore-side spots with wooden posts and signs to prevent further damage to their land.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS learned some fishermen were allegedly tearing up the land and trashing the beach.

We tracked down the property owner at an Olmito home. She wasn't there, but a family member of hers spoke to us off camera.

He said the property owner decided to close the shore to fishermen because they were damaging the land. Many had been using it to undock their kayaks or small boats.

The trash dumped throughout Holly Beach, he said, was another factor.

Earlier this week, a San Benito fisherman that had been going to the beach for 15 years reached out to us to find out why his favorite fishing hole was closed.

He said Holly Beach was one of the few areas where people could go fishing for free.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Capt. James Dunks confirmed the land is privately owned and the owner has the right to request that fishermen stay away.

When CHANNEL 5 NEWS visited the beach Friday, crews found several of the wooden posts had been broken-off from their cement bases and moved.

Dunks said fishermen caught at Holly Beach without the owner's permission could be arrested.
