LYFORD – Police in Lyford continue to investigate the death of a 9-month-old girl. They say they’re treating the case as a homicide, as is standard procedure.

The owner of the daycare where the baby was found unresponsive spoke out Thursday.

Roger Gonzalez had to fight back tears as he spoke about the death of the baby girl.

"We're grieving over the loss of one of our little angels. It's hard," Gonzalez said.

According to Lyford Police Chief Andres Maldonado, the 9-month-old girl was taking a nap when a daycare worker at Kidsville Learning Center found her unresponsive.

Maldonado says an autopsy has been ordered to determine what caused her death.

Gonzalez told CHANNEL 5 NEWS his staff performed CPR on the child until an ambulance arrived.

"All procedures were followed in compliance with the state," he said.

Maldonado said all employees at the daycare were questioned. They've requested the help of the Texas Rangers and the Willacy County Sheriff's Department because they don't "want to leave any stone unturned" in the case.

Child Protective Services investigators were at the center Thursday, Gonzalez said, to make sure all his staff is licensed accordingly and up-to-date on their CPR training.

Parents dropping off their children were turned away.

"They cry with us, they embrace our teachers and they are hurting," he said, "even though it's not their child, they are hurting."

The daycare will remain closed the rest of the week and will re-open on Monday, Feb. 19.
