Peñitas road expansion project completed
A $14 million road improvement project is now over in Peñitas.
Crews spent the last two years working to expand Mile 3 Line in Peñitas from two to five lanes.
The new lanes opened Thursday.
Crews also widened four intersections along the three and a half mile stretch of road.
The project also addressed a flood risk along the road.
“This would get flooded,” Hidalgo County Precinct 3 Commissioner Everardo "Ever" Villarreal said. “We had to rescue several families that would go in thinking the water was not that deep, but it was actually anywhere from three to four feet deep."
Money for the project came from Hidalgo County and the Texas Department of Transportation.
