SOUTH PADRE ISLAND – Plans for a second causeway to South Padre Island are currently on hold.

The head of the project says a state agency is not allowing any tollways.

KRGV’s Christian Von Preysing spoke with several boaters in Arroyo City. They say it would be a good idea to have a second causeway to get them to the island quicker.

The Cameron County Regional Mobility Authority says in case things change, the staff plans to reduce the cost of construction and make it a non-tollway project.

But for now, the 8-mile bridge that would connect near Beach Access 5 is stuck.
