MISSION – A new international bridge is in the works in Hidalgo County.

Mission Mayor Norberto Salinas said the city already had a permit for the soon to be Madero Bridge. The permit was obtained decades ago, but the plans never took off.

The city of Mission will work with McAllen and Hidalgo to fund the bridge.

Salinas said $19 million for the project is already secured. They still need another $25 million.

Salinas said the governor of Tamaulipas is on board for the construction.

“He wants to be able to work with us on that bridge and I’m very happy that he is going to be working with us, because we didn’t think that he was going to work with us on the bridge and it was going to be the federal government,” Salinas said.

According to the mayor, the idea is to make Anzalduas Bridge solely a car traffic bridge with the Madero Bridge handling commercial traffic.
