South Texas College hosted it's 7th Annual Disaster Ready Expo in Weslaco.

It's an effort to help community members prepare for emergencies like hurricanes, floods and power outages.

"Who to call, who to contact, which people to watch, whether it's television, radio or the internet, social media, because there are so many ways to get the information out. We want to make sure it's the proper information, that's very important," coordinator Jeremy Hinck said.

About 80 students from Brownsville, Progreso and Mission attended the event along with more than a hundred other community members.

Hinck says it's important for students and community members to get their insight from experts, which is why the expo brings in local agencies and experts to speak.

Among those experts were Channel 5 News' Chief Meteorologist Tim Smith.
