Travelers Taking Precautions When Crossing Border
PROGRESO----Some people crossing the border are taking extra precaution after a shootout in Mexico this week.
Winter Texans and valley natives like to cross the border on the weekend to shop.
After the shootout in Reynosa this week, they said they are being extra careful.
Numerous people we talked to about the violence in Mexico did not want to be on camera.
They said they would not have gone to Mexico today if they knew what happened in Reynosa just a few days ago.
Not everyone is fearful to cross the border.
Winter Texans Paul and Nichole Paladie are from Wisconsin.
They're planning to move down here permanently and say the violence won't deter them from going to Mexico.
"We live in America where we get shootings. It's going to happen. I'm not concerned either way," said Paladie.
Paladie says they do take precautions like only going a few blocks in and...
"We did tell family and friends where we were going," said Paladie.
Someone else traveling across the border is Valley native Noe Sanchez.
He said he only uses this bridge in Progreso.
"I used to travel Mexico a lot, not anymore. I just go here, do my shopping and come back", said Sanchez.
Sanchez said he's aware of the violence, but will not stop going to Mexico because it's more economical for healthcare.
"You can't compare prices. As far as dental work, you can't compare prices," said Sanchez.
Sanchez makes sure to do what many others do when they travel to Mexico.
"You have your limits. You only got three...four blocks. Further on down, take it on your own risk," said Sanchez.
He recommended everyone do the same.
The U.S. Department of State issued a travel warning to certain parts of Mexico.
Those areas include Colima, Guerrero, Michoacan, Sinoloa, and Tamaulipas.
