Trolley tour taking visitors to historic Starr County sites
A group of 19 Winter Texans explored Starr County by taking part in a brand new trolley tour.
The trolley, Bessie, is named after a steamboat that carried people and cargo on the river in the 1800s that is credited to providing trade in the area.
The tour takes visitors through some of the most historic spots in Rio Grande City and Roma.
“Both cities have a lot to offer, but we do each have our own unique things,” Roma event coordinator Jasmin Lopez said.
The new tour is part of a new partnership between the two sister cities to promote tourism and shed light on Starr County's history to locals and visitors alike.
The tour starts in Roma where visitors are taken to the Roma Bluffs World Birding Center, a distillery, and the historic 97-year-old suspension bridge over the Rio Grande.
After the bridge, Bessie takes visitors to Rio Grande City for a tour of Fort Ringgold, the house Gen. Robert E. Lee stayed in. They then hear ghost stories from the haunted hotel, La Borde House.
The cities will hold a tour once every month. To find out when the next tour will be, visit either the Rio Grande City Facebook page or the city of Roma Facebook page.
Tickets for the trolley can be bought at the Rio Grande City Main Street building, located at 406 East Main Street. Tickets cost $20 per person.
