UTRGV golfer Jorge Martin Sampedro qualifies for NCAA Championships after historic performance
UTRGV golfer Jorge Martin Sampedro made history on Tuesday. The freshman from Spain is heading to the NCAA National Tournament after wrapping up the Bryan Regional with a three-round score of 208, finishing as the top individual not part of the five qualifying teams.
"Freshman, unbelievable," UTRGV Director of Golf Houston Moore added. "His best strength is his mental game, so kudos to him. He hit all the golf shots this week, so just couldn't be more proud of him."
Sampedro had a near flawless performance, with only one bogey over the three-day tournament. The last time a UTRGV golfer made it to the National Tournament was in 1978 when David Steffan qualified as a member of the program.
"I was trying to go shot by shot and finally ended up taking the spot, so game was so good and yeah, I'm really happy and hopefully I can end up doing good at nationals," Martin Sampedro said.
The NCAA National Tournament will take place at the Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, California from May 29 to June 3.
