Fire marshals across the Rio Grande Valley are working together to help prevent house fires.

Over the weekend, a San Juan neighborhood will become a little safer. Fire crews will go door to door to help install smoke detectors.

"It's a good idea to prevent a fire or an accident," San Juan resident Oscar Campos said.

Campos lives in the neighborhood, and he agrees it will help prevent a tragedy.

Fire marshal from cities and counties from across the Valley are identifying neighborhoods they feel would benefit from free smoke detectors.

"Early detection is extremely important, and we want to make sure that everyone has that," Cameron County Fire Marshal Juan Martinez said.

They're partnering with the American Red Cross to get it done. Fire marshals knew they needed to take action after several deadly fires happened across the Valley this year.

"Through every city, through every county, and we're going to be loud about it. We want to make sure that everybody knows about this, and we want to make sure that everybody is safe. We don't want to see fire fatalities anymore," Martinez said.

The effort doesn't just stop at smoke detectors. Fire marshals will also be doing fire safety house checks.

"We want to be able to make sure we educate the public on that, have a working smoke detector for example, what to do if your smoke detector goes off," McAllen Fire Marshal Cesar Cadena said. "What to do with lithium-ion batteries, how to purchase them, how to charge them, how to recycle them, they're a big issue right now in the home."

Cadena says they already know which areas they would like to visit.

The San Juan neighborhood that was chosen for Saturday's visit has older homes that are closer together and have a larger elderly community.

While San Juan resident Blanca Cantu already has a smoke detector, she says a visit from fire crews would still be beneficial.

"As a matter of fact, I have some old fire extinguishers. I don't know if it's 12 months or 18 months, but I had them there, and I don't know how to get rid of them," Cantu said.

In the end, the goal is to make sure everyone across the Valley is educated and has a smoke detector.

Fire marshals will start making their rounds in San Juan before moving onto Alamo.

To make an appointment to have a smoke detector installed in your home, call the American Red Cross at 956-423-0523 or contact your local fire marshal's office.
