WESLACO – Although it’s been months after Hurricane Maria hit the island of Puerto Rico, relief is still on its way from the Rio Grande Valley.

Category 4 Hurricane Maria’s impact left thousands without power in the island.

“For instance, I had somebody that’s already over there; ahead of us and they drove like two and a half hours through the country and towns and so forth,” said Ruben Martinez, pastor at Living Word Evangelical Free Church. “And out their whole time only one traffic light was working.”

Soon after, many people fled to see refuge in Florida.

Martinez said he, his wife and daughter, who are both nurses, will be heading to disaster-hit areas. He said he’s going to help a team of doctors with medical and emotional help.

The pastor said he also assisted other affected areas in Texas after Hurricane Harvey hit and even disasters in Haiti.

“The needs for people whether they are in the state or Haiti or wherever, are really the same. They need perspective, they need support, they need love, they need understanding, but also inside about life,” he said. “What’s the meaning of life?”

Martinez said his family will be assisting for a week.
