WESLACO – State leaders visited the Rio Grande Valley to assess damages left behind by recent severe storms.

A Mercedes woman says they were left to dry out what remained of her childhood home. She says she’s aware they’re not the only family still in a flood zone.

On Tuesday, the governor signed a request for a federal disaster declaration for Cameron and Hidalgo counties.

“There’s still 10 colonias that remain either underwater or surrounded by water who need urgent and immediate help,” he pointed out.

A local official says a lack of drainage systems may have aggravated the problem.

KRGV’s Angelo Vargas has more information.
