MCALLEN – Local humanitarians announced they’re looking for volunteers to help with an overflow of people arriving to the U.S.

The Diocese of Brownsville posted a statement Thursday evening calling for help as an increase in refugees makes its way to the Humanitarian Respite Center in McAllen.

Sister Norma Pimentel with Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley says more help is needed at the center because this week’s number of people coming into the country illegally is growing.

She says numbers reached up to 50 people a day about a month ago.

The center, located at 1721 Beaumont Ave in downtown McAllen, provides food, clothing and other supplies for those who look to make their way up north.

Anyone willing to volunteer can head down to the location or call Catholic Charities at 956-897-3949 to speak with a volunteer coordinator.
