Willacy Co. Jail Has 90 Days to Fix Issues, Meet State Minimum Standards of Compliance
RAYMONDVILLE – The Willacy County Sheriff’s Office has been put on notice by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.
State officials tell CHANNEL 5 NEWS there are several things out of compliance at the county jail.
The executive director with TCJS, Brandon Wood, said each year they are required to make a least one visit to all 240 facilities across the state.
They arrived without notice at the Willacy County Jail on Jan. 22.
Wood said there were no major issues of compliance with overcrowding or understaffing, but the following was discovered:
- Heater not working
- Sinks with no hot water
- Padded room is damaged
- Several lights not working
- Suicidal inmates reporting (improper procedure)
He said jail officials will have up to 90 days to get in compliance.
Willacy County Sheriff Larry Spence told CHANNEL 5 NEWS these issues are already being fixed. They have already replaced the heater that went out during a recent freeze event, he said.
He said a plan to better report and keep track of inmates that may be suicidal is also now in place.
State officials said there are no financial repercussions for these violations.
Wood said Spence turned in a plan to the state saying everything is expected to be fixed in the next 30 days.
