The Alamo Police Department is advising against using free Wi-Fi networks in public areas.
Local resident Paula Moya says she realized she was a victim of identity theft when the Internal Revenue Service questioned her for not filing certain income.
Moya says a Minnesota woman was allegedly using her Social Security number to request loans.
She says she has no idea how her identity was stolen.
Alamo Police Department officer Juan Meza says Wi-Fi networks are one way people are falling victim to identity theft.
Meza urges residents to avoid sharing personal information when using public networks.
