24-Year-Old Arrested for Attempting to Smuggle People in Mission

MISSION – A man is behind bars accused of smuggling and evading arrest.

Mission police said 24-year-old Roel Eduardo Coronel hid nearly 20 people in the country illegally in a U-Haul truck. Officers tried to pull him over, but Coronel led them on a high speed chase.

He drove over a fence and bailed out of the U-Haul. Then he hid inside an apartment, where he held a woman against her will.

He was arrested and told police he was heading to McAllen. Coronel faces multiple charges including:

  • Smuggling of Persons (Third Degree Felony)
  • Evading Arrest with a Vehicle (State Jail Felony)
  • Evading Arrest on Foot (Class A Misdemeanor)

He’s being held on a $205,000 bond.
