3 Dead in Head-On Collision near Raymondville

NEAR RAYMONDVILLE – Police said three people died in a fatal head-on collision on US 77 north of FM 1672.

DPS Lt. Johnny Hernandez said the scene was cleared and US 77 southbound lanes have been reopened.

Authorities said the accident happened around 1:30 p.m. Friday.

Preliminary information shows the driver of a Cadillac Escalade, 23-year-old Abraham Cerda, of Brownsville, was heading northbound on the southbound lanes when he hit a Ford Expedition head-on.

Two people in the SUV were killed. Hernandez said the victims were 72-year-old Rafael Garza and 69-year-old Catalina Garza of Port Isabel.

Cerda also died at the scene.

Police said they used two tow trucks to separate the two vehicles.

The investigation is ongoing.
