WESLACO – A Weslaco family in mourning noticed a prized possession of their late father was stolen.

Johnny Mize’s two-year-long battle with cancer ended over the weekend.

KRGV’s John Paul Barajas spoke with a family friend who knew Mize for almost 50 years.

"I don't know how anybody could stoop that low to do something like steal from a dead man,” says family friend Leeroy Veland.

The Mize family filed a police report with the Weslaco Police Department after a barbecue pit was stolen from their property.

Veland says a reward of more than $3,000 is being offered to anyone who finds it.

Anyone with information is asked to call Weslaco Crime Stoppers at 956-968-8477.
