SOUTH PADRE ISLAND - A water boil notice in South Padre Island was lifted Thursday.

It was issued Tuesday night when crews digging hit a water pipe, causing a drop in water pressure.

Island business owners are now breathing a sigh of relief because they say this couldn't have come at a worse time.

Running water is an essential part of running a successful restaurant.

Tina McMan owner of The Karaken restaurant bar on South Padre Island tells us, for the past two days she shut down her restaurant as a precautionary measure and it proved costly.

"We've lost at least $3,000 assuming on a very slow day, to as much as $10,000 just on this one day and I know the restaurants all around here are suffering the same way," says McMan.

Water District General Manager, Carlos Galvan, tells us independent contractors working to dig for underground cables, hit a water pipe.

Although the pipe was repaired about three hours later and the island's water towers provided water during the break, the water pressure dipped below state standards.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality indicates that low water pressure, can allow bacteria to seep-in.

Galvan says water samples collected Wednesday were sent for lab testing.

Just after 2:00 p.m. Thursday, results showed there was no bacteria in the water and the boil notice was lifted.

People that make their living working on the island are hoping to make up for their loses during the weekend rush.
