Hundreds of Brownsville ISD students are getting ready to walk the stage starting Thursday night in the first of several graduation ceremonies at Sams Stadium.

Thousands of people are expected to attend.

The biggest graduating class is around 600 students. People are encouraged to use the main entrance, which provides access to all sides of the stadium.

The Jefferson entrance will be open, but that entrance only provides access to one side of the field.

These graduating seniors will be the first to use the upgraded stadium to celebrate the next chapter of their lives.

Brownsville ISD Chief of Police Anna Gaucin said security will be tight.

"We'll have our drone operations up and running throughout the event. There's a lot that goes into making sure our students have a safe, enjoyable, memorable graduation," Gaucin said.

Gaucin said they are anticipating more than 27,000 people to attend graduation ceremonies over the next six days. Traffic control is one of their priorities.

Brownsville ISD police will work with multiple law enforcement agencies to keep people safe.

"We're gonna have officers posted at strategic areas of the stadium. So by all means, if there's anything that they see out of the ordinary, please let us know as soon as possible, so we can address it," Gaucin said.

Metal detectors will be used at different entrances. Because the ceremonies are outdoors, officials are encouraging people to stay hydrated.

Brownsville ISD said they are monitoring the weather and have backup plans in place.

Gladys Porter High School senior Sophia Jaramillo is among the students preparing to graduate. She is the class valedictorian and will give a speech at the ceremony.

Jaramillo earned a full ride to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and plans to attend medical school.

"I hope to make new connections, network as much as possible," Jaramillo said. "I'll get to decorate my dorm. Have my own freedom and just hopefully live life to the fullest."
