A burn ban that went into effect in Cameron County will not be extended, according to Cameron County Fire Marshal Juan Martinez.

The burn ban was issued in August and will not be extended past Wednesday, Nov. 22.

Martinez said the recent rain played a role in the ban being lifted.

“We were in an exceptional drought just a week ago,” Martinez said. “This rain, and the rain we’re expected to get here in the next couple of weeks, is definitely gonna be helpful on ending the drought situation here in Cameron County."

An updated map of drought conditions throughout the Rio Grande Valley is due to be released on Thursday, Nov. 16.
