Early voting is underway for primary runoff elections in Cameron County.

Brownsville resident Lorena Govea voted in the March primaries and is back at the polls again this week.

"We need to continue with our support, and we need to get the results that we are looking for. We shouldn't give up," Govea said.

Govea said she prefers voting early to avoid long lines.

"I like to vote early just to avoid the lines and just get a head start, but sometimes it's inevitable; you just have to," Govea said.

Govea believes Brownsville voters play a big role for the county.

"It's important that our voice is heard, and it's important to have our presence as the largest city in the county," Govea said.

Cameron County Elections Administrator Remi Garza said runoff elections historically see lower voter turnout. He said this year could be different because of what's on the ballot.

"Probably about 30 to 40% is average, but with the interest that's been expressed for some of the races, we think that might actually go up to 50 or 60% of the voters who will return," Garza said.

Garza said voting early has its advantages.

"The availability of the polling locations and the hours that they have. Also, you have a one-week window during the runoff so you can actually choose the time that's convenient for you to cast your ballot versus waiting for May 26, where you only have one day," Garza said.

Govea said she learned the importance of voting from her parents and hopes to inspire future generations.

"You have to have that voice for your futures. You have to set that example if you want to make a change or want that change; you have to be that change," Govea said.

Early voting runs through Friday, May 22. Election Day is next Tuesday, May 26.
