Instead of celebrating Christmas, two families in Mercedes were left trying to find shelter.

A fire broke out before 6 a.m. Monday on Chapman Street south of Bus. 83 as the families woke up to the sound of the crackling sound of flames slowly engulfing their homes.

Ramon Garza Alverado, 71, said he’s lived at his apartment for nearly 20 years. His neighbors — a family of four — are also trying to keep their head above water. 

On Tuesday, officers with the Mercedes Police Department surprised the children affected by the fire with several toys and new clothes.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
